Another Layer

remember me kindly

Dear E,

Before I met you, I don’t think I realized how close you can become to a person over a short amount of time. During our first conversation about Starbucks and being a barista, I didn’t know how much you would grow to mean to me, or know the amount of endless conversations we’d have about life in the back room trying to ignore the fact that we’re at work. It’s challenging for me to feel very comfortable with people and open up to others but I think I admired your groundedness in who you are and your ability to listen so intently, and I began to look forward to seeing you every weekend wondering what deep conversation we’d have next. Once everything in my life blew up, you were there for me so much. You never grew tired of listening to my repetitive rambles repeating the same “I just don’t understand” over and over again, and you never made me feel crazy about the loop I couldn’t escape from. You made me feel understood and related to, and could somehow always lighten up the situation but never insensitively. You’re such a breath of fresh air and genuinely one of the most wonderful, genuine people I’ve ever met in my entire life. I’ll miss our veering on the side of pretentious conversations about authors and literature and your interesting jack of all trade stories about exterminating iguanas or your near death experience in the Keys, but most of all, I’ll just miss seeing you. I’ll miss your face and your smile, and just coming into work knowing I’ll get to see you. And perhaps this feels overly sentimental, but I’ve realized over time how challenging and rare it is to find a person you really can become close to and be yourself with, and I’m just sad to see you go. I hope Florida treats you more than well, I hope it’s the best thing ever for you and Arwen. Please keep in touch.

Love,
K
