lakeshore drive
As the drop of water falls from the gray sky
and lands on my cheek,
I remember how to cry while
I return to that moment in the blue, top down,
as we soared, sails filled with the wind on our backs.
The trees arched around us
holding the world beyond their branches,
keeping our naivety intact.
Suddenly you lifted your calloused hand that was caressing my thigh
to reach over and point to my right,
while your other hand remained on the wheel driving us
somewhere I thought we’d always arrive.
As I glanced from your face to your outstretched hand,
I saw the blue
blurring between the lines of the trees.
And the piano began playing,
that one familiar melody.
