Day 15
I'm currently reading "The Let Them Theory," by Mel Robbins.
It's funny because when I first saw this book on an endcap in Barnes and Noble, I immediately thought it looked like the next, typical self-help book that just wanted to grab your attention. And honestly, the title does definitely grab your eye, especially if you're someone who struggles with letting people affect them. But I also thought "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F" looked similar and it sort of changed my life. LOL. So, why not give it a chance!
So far, the book has been interesting. I definitely can relate to certain thought processes, and I appreciate the general terms, "let them" and "let me." But I think I'm having a little trouble connecting to the depth of the idea, because I think to fully grasp something, you need to understand it through and through. Of course, to be fair, I'm only about a third of the way through the book, so we will see what comes with time.
I have picked up some great mindset theories, however, like the 5-second rule! This doesn't have to do with the theory the book is about, so much, as Robbins just touched on it due to the fact that she has a whole different book about it. It's a theory where if you're procrastinating about something because you feel bad about yourself or stressed or overwhelmed, you can count down from 5 to jumpstart your brain and stop thinking about why you don't want to start something, and just... start it!
I've applied it to sillier things like cleaning recently, and I just feel like it allows for my mind to enter a "productive mode" and I have a lot of energy to get even more done after the initial task. So, I recommend this method: 10/10.
Pertaining to the book's true theory, I just recently finished up the portion where she talks on accepting others and realizing the only person you can change is you! This is a great concept to remember, but just not one that is notable to me. Which is where I fall back into wondering if I'm just not hitting the depth of the methods; therefore, just not getting the full benefit from it. I guess how I feel I could explain it, is I feel the book is a great reminder for my brain because I'm in the process of reading it, but there's not a specific, new method I've picked up on so far that I feel I will be able to apply to my life after I've finished reading the book and can only look back on it.
I am going to continue reading it with an open mind because I learned the most from Mark Manson's book during the final stretch. Wish me luck!
