as she burdens his body with the weight of her own
The boy comes over. He knocks lightly and awakes the sleeping girl and immediately settles into her as if not a day has passed.
They lay like that momentarily but there is a different feeling. It isn’t quite the same, is it?
For what has he done that cannot be forgotten or set aside. What dust has he blown into the air that has now settled on each corner of the room and into the lungs of the girl, even as she sleeps.
They spend the evening together. Talking about nothing and everything, but still the feeling seems to linger. She doesn’t want to be trampled on anymore, her heart can’t take anymore.
And so, instead of words, they use their bodies. They softly fall into each other and it feels as if it is all just the same, the feeling no longer present.
After they make their love that can’t quite be referred to as love anymore, they nestle back into the sofa. The girl closes her eyes, exhausted and heavy. She burdens his body with the weight of her own, mouth falling open, as she reaches a dream state.
He stays like this for a while, letting the feeling last, as the dust slowly falls back into all the crevasses of their lives. But eventually, he feels he’s lingered too long and the feeling has returned.
He arises, shuts off the lights, kisses her softly on her head as he once used to do so often, and leaves the dust behind him. Turning his back to it, as he’s so accustomed to doing.
But the reader has to understand that this is not fueled by anger or upset. It is an outpouring of words to captivate a feeling deep within. It is a feeling that is melancholy but indeed, so worth it.
