Another Layer

and this is what makes us girls

Oh, girlhood. What is it to be a woman in today’s age, and have friends as I so gratefully do.

It’s truly something to feel so desperately alone and in despair, to the point of having trouble breathing and having that feeling of nausea that overtakes your being. And to pick up the phone and call that one person. And although the miles may separate you, and it may just be their small voice through the speaker of your silly cell-phone; still, something about it sends an electric shock back into your heart and allows it to beat steadily again.

Girlhood is relaying your aching feelings as streams of tears fall down your already damp face, and hearing the crying on the other end of the emotions similarly evoked through that cross-country line. To feel so seen and so heard. And then, laughing through the emotion and crying together while you hear the smile breach both your faces. Knowing now, we’re experiencing this together, yes. This is what it is to be loved or cared for. We are one and the same.

And you see, this isn’t something I’ve ever known. It’s something fulfilling and life-bearing. So, yes, I love to experience these things and to find the beauty in the pain or the graciousness in the suffering. And, I yearn for this, and always have, and find it so gratifying, yet unfair that I can finally experience it through tragedy. But, this is how life has always been for thousands of years. People have found the most meaningful symbolism and hope through grief. I am no different than the millions of humans that have come before me and felt deeply and loved honorably and lived fruitfully. So, henceforth, I shall continue this legacy.

Because far be it from me to end the symbolic beauty of what it means to be alive.
